Somalia Launches First-Ever National Hepatitis Strategic Plan (2025–2030) on World Hepatitis Day

Mogadishu, July 28, 2025  In a landmark move to combat one of Somalia’s most pressing public health threats, the Ministry of Health and Human Services officially launched the Somali National Hepatitis Control and Elimination Strategy 2025–2030.

The launch, held on World Hepatitis Day 2025, brought together senior government officials, healthcare leaders, researchers, people living with hepatitis, and development partners, underscoring Somalia’s renewed commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

The strategy outlines a comprehensive roadmap for prevention, testing, treatment, vaccination, and strengthening surveillance systems. It prioritizes Hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine introduction, scaling up community screening, subsidized vaccination programs, and integrating hepatitis services into primary healthcare.

The event was attended by national and international stakeholders, including WHO, Africa CDC, Abbott, and local partners such as the Somali Hepatitis Trust (SomHepatitis) and Horn Afrik Institute for health studies, which has been at the forefront of community-based awareness, screening, and advocacy efforts.
