Somalia Launches Its First National Hepatitis Control Program

A Landmark Victory in the Fight against Hepatitis

Mogadishu, Somalia – 29 July 2023

Somalia has taken a historic step in the fight against viral hepatitis with the launch of its first National Hepatitis Control Program, officially unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services on World Hepatitis Day 2023 at Afrik Hotel, Mogadishu.

The Somali Hepatitis Initiative (HEPSOM) proudly joined the Ministry, partners, and stakeholders to celebrate this milestone the first national framework dedicated to hepatitis B and C prevention, control, and elimination.

A Turning Point in Somalia’s Health Journey

For decades, hepatitis has been a silent epidemic in Somalia, affecting thousands due to limited access to screening, vaccination, and treatment.

The establishment of the National Hepatitis Control Program signals a new era in public health leadership and a nationwide commitment to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat.

Program Focus Areas

The new program is designed around six strategic pillars:

  1. Policy and Governance – Develop and implement a National Hepatitis Policy and Strategic Framework; establish a National Hepatitis Steering Committee for coordination and accountability.
  2. Prevention and Vaccination – Introduce the Hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine; expand vaccination for healthcare workers, teachers, and high-risk groups.
  3. Screening, Testing, and Early Diagnosis – Scale up nationwide screening and integrate testing into antenatal, HIV, and TB programs.
  4. Treatment, Care, and Referral Systems – Ensure affordable treatment access and develop standardized national treatment protocols.
  5. Awareness, Education, and Community Engagement – Conduct nationwide awareness campaigns and empower community leaders to fight stigma.
  6. Research, Data, and Surveillance – Establish a national hepatitis registry and strengthen evidence-based policymaking.

Dedicated Leadership

During the launch, the Federal Ministry of Health appointed the first National Hepatitis Control Program Manager, ensuring dedicated leadership, coordination, and oversight at both national and regional levels.

Global and Local Relevance

Viral hepatitis is among the leading causes of liver cancer and liver-related deaths worldwide. In Somalia, where access to vaccination and structured treatment has been limited, this national program provides renewed hope for thousands of families.

This is a historic moment for Somalia. For the first time, we have a national framework to fight hepatitis. As HEPSOM, we stand ready to support this journey with community engagement, awareness, and research to make elimination a reality,”
Dr. Mohamed Abdulkadir Hassan-Kadle, Gastroenterology & Liver Specialist and Founder of HEPSOM
