Free FibroScan Screening Shines Spotlight on Liver Health in Somalia
Mogadishu, Somalia – 28 July 2024
To mark World Hepatitis Day 2024, the Waaberi Hospital and Liver Center Somalia, in collaboration with the Somali Hepatitis Trust (SHT) organized a FibroScan Screening Program aimed at early detection of liver fibrosis and raising awareness about viral hepatitis in Somalia.
Hundreds of community members from Mogadishu participated in the free event, where medical specialists performed non-invasive liver stiffness assessments using the FibroScan device—a first-of-its-kind community-based initiative in the country. Participants also received rapid hepatitis B and C testing, counselling, and educational materials about liver disease prevention.
Dr. Mohamed Abdulkadir Hassan-Kadle, Gastroenterology & Liver Specialist and Program Lead, stated:
“This campaign demonstrates that liver disease can be detected before it becomes irreversible. Our goal is to make screening accessible for everyone and integrate FibroScan into national hepatitis elimination efforts.”
The campaign’s theme, “One Time Testing, A Lifetime of Health,” resonated widely across social media, encouraging citizens to know their hepatitis status and seek medical advice early.
