1. Background
World Hepatitis Day 2025 was marked by Somali Hepatitis Trust (SHT) through a community campaign that combined prevention, diagnosis, and treatment support. The initiative directly responded to the hepatitis burden in Somalia and aligned with the National Hepatitis Strategic Plan 2025–2030.
2. Objectives
- Provide subsidized Hepatitis B & C screening to at least 1,000 community members.
- Increase vaccine uptake by offering free Hepatitis B vaccination.
- Ensure free clinical evaluation and liver ultrasound for hepatitis-positive patients.
- Raise public awareness about prevention and early detection.
3. Activities
- Screening booths and vaccination stations were set up at Samakaal Hospital.
- Around 1,000 people screened for Hepatitis B and C.
- Free Hepatitis B vaccination offered to hundreds of participants.
- Hepatitis-positive patients referred for free specialist consultations and liver ultrasounds.
- Health education delivered via banners, posters, and patient talks.
4. Outcomes
- 1,000 people screened in a week.
- Free vaccinations improved affordability, leading to higher uptake.
- Dozens of patients with positive results received immediate medical follow-up.
- Strengthened public-private-government collaboration.
5. Next Steps
- Expand similar community programs to city and regional hospitals.
- Establish regular screening and vaccination days nationwide.
- Continue community sensitization campaigns to combat stigma.
