Somali Hepatitis Trust Joins Launch of Somalia’s First National Hepatitis Steering Committee
Mogadishu, Somalia – 28 July 2024 – The Somali Hepatitis Trust (SomHepatitis) proudly participated in the historic launch of Somalia’s first National Hepatitis Steering Committee, organized by the National Hepatitis Control Program, Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services to coincide with World Hepatitis Day 2024.
The event, attended by senior officials, health experts, and civil society representatives, marks a major milestone in Somalia’s fight against viral hepatitis.
The new Steering Committee will serve as the central body to coordinate national hepatitis policies and strategies, guide prevention and treatment strategies, and oversee progress toward elimination by 2030.
Representatives from SomHepatitis joined other key partners including WHO, Save the Children, Hepatitis B Foundation, Action Against Hunger, and the Global Hepatitis Elimination Task Force in reaffirming their commitment to supporting the Ministry in rolling out this agenda.
Speaking at the event, a Somali Hepatitis Trust delegate said:
“This Steering Committee is the structure we have long needed. It ensures accountability, coordination, and action to make elimination a reality for Somalia.”
The launch reflects Somalia’s growing alignment with global health priorities while ensuring that hepatitis patients and at-risk communities are placed at the center of national planning.
