Somali Hepatitis Trust Welcomes a New Era of Coordinated Action Against Hepatitis
Mogadishu, Somalia – 28 July 2024 – On World Hepatitis Day 2024, the National Hepatitis Control Program, Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services officially launched Somalia’s first National Hepatitis Steering Committee, a landmark step in the country’s response to hepatitis B and C.
The Somali Hepatitis Trust (SomHepatitis), together with international and national partners, participated in the ceremony, which brought together government leaders, public health experts, universities, and NGOs.
The Steering Committee will:
- Provide national leadership in hepatitis control.
- Strengthen screening, vaccination, and treatment services.
- Ensure coordination between government, civil society, and international partners.
- Track progress toward Somalia’s commitment to the WHO goal of eliminating hepatitis by 2030.
“The formation of the Steering Committee is a turning point. For the first time, Somalia has a unified platform to guide, monitor, and accelerate our response to hepatitis. As Somali Hepatitis Trust, we are honored to be part of this historic milestone,” said Dr. Mohamed Abdulkadir Hassan-Kadle, Co-Founder of Somali Hepatitis Trust.
This initiative was supported by key partners including WHO, Save the Children, Hepatitis B Foundation, Action Against Hunger, and the Global Hepatitis Elimination Task Force.
The establishment of the Steering Committee signals Somalia’s strong political will to transform fragmented efforts into a coordinated national program protecting future generations from the silent burden of hepatitis.
