Somalia Holds First National Consultative Meeting on Viral Hepatitis Policy
Mogadishu, Somalia – In a historic step toward controlling hepatitis in the country, National Hepatitis Control Program, the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Somali Hepatitis Trust, convened the first-ever national consultative meeting on the development of a Viral Hepatitis Policy.
The meeting, held in Mogadishu, brought together policymakers, health professionals, researchers, and civil society representatives. Discussions centered on strengthening governance, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of hepatitis B and C, which remain major public health threats in Somalia.
“This consultative process marks a turning point for Somalia’s commitment to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat,” noted participants, emphasizing the need for national coordination, improved access to diagnostics, and vaccination strategies.
The Somali Hepatitis Trust reaffirmed its role as a technical and advocacy partner, highlighting the importance of community engagement and data-driven policies. The consultation will inform the drafting of Somalia’s first National Viral Hepatitis Policy, aligned with WHO’s 2030 elimination targets.
