Somali Hepatitis Trust Participates in Landmark National Consultation on Viral Hepatitis Policy

Mogadishu, Somalia – 25 July 2024 – The Somali Hepatitis Trust proudly participated in the First National Viral Hepatitis Policy Consultative Meeting, organized by the National Hepatitis Control Program, Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The meeting represents a milestone in Somalia’s response to the growing burden of hepatitis B and C. It brought together government officials, global health partners, medical experts, and civil society to deliberate on policy priorities, governance structures, and the roadmap toward elimination.

“This is a historic moment for Somalia. For the first time, we are shaping a national policy framework that will guide prevention, testing, treatment, and community education on viral hepatitis,” said Somali Hepatitis Trust representatives.

Key discussions included:

  • Establishing a National Steering Committee on hepatitis.
  • Developing a National Hepatitis Strategy Plan.
  • Integrating hepatitis services into primary health care.
  • Scaling up hepatitis B birth-dose vaccination and blood safety.
  • Strengthening surveillance and research to generate national data.

The Somali Hepatitis Trust reiterated its commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health in advocacy, technical guidance, and community mobilization.
